| Sources provide the “who,
what, when, where and how” data are collected. For each
indicator, the following standardized reporting of data collection
has been included:
See the table below for definitions and examples:

| Data Source Definitions |
Example: Sources for
Low Birthweight Births |
| Agency Source:
Agency Source identifies the agency that supplied the
reported data to KWIC. |
Agency Source:
NYS Department of Health
|
| Data Source:
Data Source identifies the agency that is responsible
for compiling the number of events as well as the file,
certificate or record that was used to compile the data.
Data source provides data particular to the numerator.
The numerator reflects the definition of an event, reporting
practices and methods employed to identify occurrences.
KWIC data sources include vital statistics (births, deaths
and marriages), survey and administrative data. |
Data Source:
NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Biometrics,
birth certificate Note: Birth certificates provide
the number of low birthweight births in a given year,
the numerator.
|
Population
Source: Population Source identifies the source
that is used to estimate the total population who could
experience the occurrence (commonly referred to as the
population at risk) and if applicable, the file, certificate
or record that was used to compile the data. Population
source provides data particular to the denominator.
Numerous sources provide population estimates. The agencies
supplying data for KWIC use:
- NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Biometrics;
- NYS Department of Labor, Division of Research and
Statistics, Bureau of Labor Market Information;
- NYS Education Department;
- U.S. Census Bureau; and
- Woods and Poole Economics, Inc.
|
Population Source:
NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Biometrics,
birth certificate
Note: Birth certificates provide the total number of
live births in a given year, the denominator. This reflects
the population at risk of being low birthweight.

| Date Compiled:
Date Compiled identifies the time the data were accessed
and calculated. Since data for some indicators are continuously
updated (e.g., SPARCS hospital data), the numbers and
rates accessed at different dates may reflect different
findings. |
